The Perfect 48 Hours in Kansas City

Only have a weekend to explore Kansas City? Two days is plenty of time to get a taste of what makes this city worth the trip. From local coffee shops and Kansas City barbecue to art, shopping, baseball, and live jazz, we’ve put together the perfect 48-hour guide to help you make the most of your stay. Pick your favorites, explore a few different neighborhoods, and get ready for a weekend in KC!!

Your Kansas City Weekend
Coffee → Breakfast → Explore → Lunch →
Art & Attractions → Dinner → A Night Out in KC

Pick Your Kansas City Home Base

Before you start exploring, choose a neighborhood that puts you close to the side of Kansas City you want to experience. Brookside and Waldo are great for a more neighborhood feel, while The Crossroads and Power & Light put you closer to downtown restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife. For shopping, dining, and plenty to do within a small area, The Plaza and Westport are also easy places to build a weekend around.

Where to Stay

Kansas City has plenty of great hotels depending on where you want to spend your weekend. Check into The Crossroads Hotel for easy access to the Crossroads Arts District, stay downtown at Hotel Kansas City, book InterContinental Kansas City near the Plaza, or make Hotel Westport your home base for a weekend centered around one of KC’s best-known entertainment districts.

Day One: Coffee & Breakfast

Start your first morning the way any good weekend should: with coffee. Try Hi Hat Coffee, Crows Coffee, Messenger Coffee, or The Roasterie before heading to breakfast. For something more substantial, grab a pastry at McLain’s Bakery, order a crêpe at Chez Elle Crêperie, stop into Café Corazón, or settle in for brunch at The Farmhouse.

Spend the Morning Outside

Once you’re fueled up, spend a few hours outside. Go shopping around The Plaza, walk through Meadowbrook Park, catch a Kansas City Royals baseball game if they’re in town, or head over to the Overland Park Farmers’ Market. Your choice can easily set the pace for the rest of the day, whether you want something relaxed or an afternoon built around a game.

Lunch in Kansas City

You can’t spend 48 hours in Kansas City without making time for a good lunch. Try Caffetteria for a casual stop, go straight for KC barbecue at Q39, grab a pizza at SPIN! Pizza, or head downtown for lunch at The Rockhill Grille. With another full day ahead, there’s no need to fit every Kansas City favorite into one meal.

An Afternoon of Art & Exploring

Spend the afternoon seeing another side of Kansas City. Explore Kaleidoscope and the Hallmark Visitors Center at Crown Center, make your way through Science City and Union Station, spend a few hours at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, or experience the imaginative world of The Rabbit hOle. There’s enough variety here to build the afternoon around art, science, history, or something completely unexpected.

Dinner & Your First Night Out

For dinner, make a reservation at Lidia’s, try Scratch Gourmet Kitchen, head to The Westside Local, or grab dinner at Barrio in Brookside. Then finish your first night with one of KC’s best evening experiences: live jazz at Green Lady Lounge, a show at The Midland Theatre, a performance at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, or drinks overlooking the city at The Mercury Room.

Day Two: Mix, Match & See What You Missed

The best part about having 48 hours is getting another full day to explore. Pick a coffee shop or breakfast spot you missed on day one, spend the morning in a different district, and choose another activity from the list. If your first day was spent downtown in the Crossroads and at Union Station, make day two about Brookside, The Plaza, or Overland Park. If you spent day one shopping and exploring neighborhoods, use your second day for the Nelson-Atkins, a Royals game, or another classic Kansas City experience. There’s no single way to do KC in 48 hours, so build the weekend around what you enjoy most.
