From March to June, Oklahoma experiences a host of hazardous weather conditions including tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash floods, and hailstorms. As part of 'Tornado Alley,' Oklahoma experiences a high frequency of tornado activity, with May typically seeing peak tornado activity. Here are some reminders and tips to help prepare your family and your home during this season!

1. Inspect and Maintain Your Roof:

A well-maintained roof is your first line of defense against storm damage. Inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles, and repair any issues promptly. Consider reinforcing vulnerable areas, such as eaves and gables, to prevent wind-driven rain from infiltrating your home. If necessary, consult a professional roofer for a thorough inspection and repairs.

2. Trim Trees and Secure Outdoor Items:

It’s incredibly important to be on top of your landscaping for more reasons than just the aesthetic! Overhanging branches and unstable trees can become dangerous projectiles during storms. Trim trees and remove dead branches to reduce the risk of them falling onto your home or power lines. Additionally, secure outdoor furniture, lawn decorations, and other loose items to prevent them from being swept away or causing damage in strong winds.

3. Document Your Home:

You never know the damage your home will sustain and it’s important as you’re filing claims to know what you currently have in order to replace or repair it. We recommend taking a video before each storm season of all outdoor sides of your home and each room. This will serve as documentation of what you own and had in those rooms to be able to successfully replace them, if needed.

4. Have Backup Power Sources:

Power outages are common during severe storms, leaving you without essential utilities for extended periods. Invest in portable chargers, rechargeable lightbulbs you can plug into your lamps, portable fans and weather radios to ensure you can still listen to the news, have light and are able to keep cool if the AC goes.

5. Create an Emergency Preparedness Kit:

In the event of a severe storm or prolonged power outage, having an emergency preparedness kit on hand can make all the difference. Stock up on essential supplies, including non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, diapers, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. Keep your kit in a designated location that is easily accessible to all household members.

By taking proactive measures to prepare your home for Oklahoma's storm season, you can minimize the risk of damage and ensure the safety and well-being of your family. Remember, preparation is key to weathering the storm and emerging unscathed.
